Turones de Casuy Review: Johnny’s Bakery Pasalubong Favorite from Amira's Tagaytay

If you’ve ever wandered through Tagaytay looking for something to take home, chances are you’ve come across the classic Turones de Casuy. It’s one of those pasalubong staples that never fails to spark nostalgia — crumbly, nutty, a little messy, and oh-so-satisfying. On our first trip, we went to Amira's and asked my son if he wanted some turones. He loved this when he was a preschooler. He said yes. There are three flavors - peanuts, pinipig, and cashew. He chose the cashew.

These turones were perfect. The hollow shell itself is crunchy, but the right kind of crunch that's neither too crumbly or too hard. The shell is sweet but not overly sweet, and goes well with the filling.

The filling is made with powdered milk, sugar, and finely ground cashews. But sometimes I get bigger bits of cashews, which is always a treat. I love cashews.

I can honestly say that I ate more of these than my son. 😆 He loved it, yes, but he doesn't like eating messy things. Even as you unwrap it, the filling already starts to spill. The trick is to unwrap it one portion at a time, making sure that the bottom part is secured, otherwise, you'd end up with milk all over your lap or table. It's quite a mess, but worth it.

I ate about 2-3 pieces in one sitting. That's enough to satisfy my craving. Oh, the powder filling makes your mouth super dry and hard to swallow, so I recommend just taking small bites at a time. And have a glass of water nearby. 😁 Sometimes, when I'm too preoccupied with writing, I forget and take a big chunk and end up with a very dry mouth, full of all that powdery goodness. I sometimes take a quick swig of water, but most times, I wait until my mouth has produced enough saliva to dissolve the powder because I want the sweet taste to linger. 😁

When I was a child, turones, polvoron, and espasol were some of those fiesta and birthday game items that the adults used. The kids would take a big bite and the first one to whistle wins. It's quite difficult to do that especially if there's polvoron involved.

These go from crunchy to chewy fast, so if you want the crunch, share this with everyone, so you finish the pack quickly. However, for me, even when it got chewy, it was still delicious. I actually liked the shift of textures. It made the experience more interesting.

Overall, Johnny’s Bakery’s Turones de Casuy hit that sweet spot of simple yet addictive. Sure, it’s not the neatest snack out there (expect a powdery mess on your hands, face, and maybe even your desk, even when you've been super careful), but that’s part of the charm. If you’re looking for a classic Tagaytay pasalubong that delivers both taste and nostalgia, this is definitely worth grabbing a pack or two. Just… don’t blame me if you can’t stop at one. 😉
