Pasalubong Diaries: Amira’s Mango Cheese Tarts + Chicharon from Tagaytay Double Review

I got these along with other things from our first Tagaytay trip.  I wasn't planning on making a review of them that's why I didn't bother taking a photo of the tart box. However, it seems you guys are interested in my curated food purchases and what I think about them. So, here we go! 😊

Amira's Mango Cheese Tarts

There was a slightly annoying thing that happened at Amira's when I got a box of these tarts from the fridge. One of the sales staff was following me around. When I put the box in my basket, she reached in and said, "Ma'am bawal po yan ng nakaganyan." (Ma'am, that's prohibited). I'm like, "Huh? Bawal?" Then she got the box and placed it on the counter. She said that it will stay there until I'm ready to pay for it. I asked her what she meant by prohibited. She said that the box should be level and not tilting as it will ruin the tarts. I put the box on top of my other purchases and sure, it was tilting a bit but the tarts aren't even touching the box cover. You can clearly see it as there's a clear cover in the middle. Plus the box was snug enough to not cause any tart movement that will ruin the top. The way she said was a little rude to me. In my head, I was like, "You can say it nicely, miss."

Anyway, back to the tarts. I was so tired one day and thought I'd just get one ham and cheese empanada from Rosario , two mango cheese tarts and a bowl of chicharon, which my son and I shared, for lunch.

The Taste

There was nothing special about the taste. As a matter of fact, it was a little bland for me. I'm not a huge fan of sweets, but this was lacking some sweetness. Just a touch more. Some of the mangoes were a bit tart. The shell had this weird taste, like floury. I didn't like the texture as well. The cheesecake itself is soft, but tasteless.

I didn't even bother tasting the other flavors (strawberry and blueberry) when we went back there last weekend.

Chicharon

This is the chicharon I got from Amira's. As you can see, I only got a small amount. This was taken just a few minutes go. We stopped eating it because there were a few pieces that tasted maantá or stale. That happens with old chicharon. My guess is that they mixed some stale ones in the bag, maybe in the middle or at the bottom.

Putting that information aside, the chicharon was pretty good. It wasn't too salty like other chicharon I've tasted. It wasn't hard to bite into or chew. Although there's nothing special about it. It's a good, typical chicharon. Those nasty stale bits were my only problem. And of course, I didn't touch this again on our second trip to Tagaytay.

Stay tuned for more food pasalubong (homecoming gift) reviews from Amira's and then we go to Vigan!

Now, excuse me as I have to throw that stale bag of chicharon away.
