Yesterday, I picked up a few baked goods from Eng Bee Tin, a brand most of us have grown up with. It’s one of those Filipino-Chinese staples that's been around forever. We’re talking chiffon rolls, egg pandesal, asado rolls, and yes — the purple swirled mantou that caught my eye.
This morning, I steamed six of those mantou swirls for breakfast. They were soft, fluffy, and looked beautiful on the plate — almost too pretty to eat. They smelled wonderful, too.
Until I actually ate one.

๐ What I Found
I bit into the mantou, chewed twice and felt something that didn’t belong — a hard, fibrous chunk that definitely wasn’t dough. I took it out and stared at it saying, "Oh, please don't be a cockroach!" I scraped off the mantou and saw that it looked like a piece of cardboard or some industrial material.
Let that sink in.
Imagine giving this to your child or elderly parent. I'll let your imagination take over.

๐งพ Why I’m Writing This
I’ve had enough experiences reaching out to businesses about quality issues only to be ignored or ghosted (hello again, Italianni’s Circuit ๐ — food poisoning and zero accountability on my husband's birthday? Not cute).
So I’m not messaging Eng Bee Tin privately. I'm putting this here on the blog — not to cancel, but to raise awareness. If someone from their team sees this and chooses to reach out, great. You are most welcome. If not, then let this serve as a reminder that even trusted legacy brands aren’t immune to quality lapses.

๐♀️ To Eng Bee Tin:
You’ve been a household name for decades. You’ve built your name on trust and tradition. Please don’t let that legacy crumble over preventable issues like this. Food safety isn’t optional.
One customer’s experience may feel small, but in this age of social media and online transparency, these small voices add up — and they matter.

๐ฌ To My Readers:
If you’ve experienced something similar — with this product or any other — feel free to share your story in the comments or tag me on socials. We need to normalize speaking up, especially in our country, not just shrugging off quality issues because “ganun talaga dito.”
Let’s push for better. We deserve better.
Stay safe,
Lady E
