This is part 2 of our adventures at the UP Food Services. Check out part 1 in the archives.
Again, I will not translate the names of the dishes as the humor will be lost.
This is a noodle dish
Laing is a dish made with taro leaves cooked with seafood or pork in a coconut milk and cream medley. It's delicious. It's a native dish of Bicol. I have Bicolana blood, but I haven't eaten this in a while. I reacted to it the last time I tried it. I enjoyed a lot of it when I was younger though as my grandma made a mean version.
I originally ordered this dish, but when I tasted it, it was innards! I don't eat innards, so we brought this for takeout to give to one of my sister's staff.
I settled for the Asian pork, but I don't have a photo! 😁 It was just pork in tomato sauce with vegetables.
They also have a mini bakery stand. I love the big chocolate cashew cookies! They were delicious, but very crumbly. It was messy to eat. Flavor was there though and it wasn't too sweet.
My son got the chicken teriyaki and that's the Asian pork on top. Mom got it.
In the middle of our meal, they brought out a big heaping, smoking tray of these candied sweet potatoes. I asked mom to buy some. Oh, my gosh! They were wonderful! The sugar glaze outside is crunchy and the sweet potato inside was hot, soft, and fluffy! I ate a few pieces. I still dream about these. I'd like to try to recreate them at home soon.
That tray didn't even last long. When that was brought out, it was a mountain! And look how much it flattened out in just a few minutes! The students swarmed!
Can we take a moment to talk about the prices on those dishes? The food here is so affordable! Delicious and affordable, that is! Plus, they have a nutritionist to make sure the meals are healthy and balanced. A lot of athletes get their food from this canteen. The place is always full of UP athletes.
And that's the end of this series. I am looking forward to more food adventures there. I'm sure we'll have more soon!
