My Real-Life Vegetable Prep System (For Busy Days)

There are days when I just don’t have the energy to think.

Not about meals.

Not about what to cook.

Not about what to chop.

Those are the days I’m most grateful for this system.

Because everything is already waiting for me.

This is how I prep vegetables at home—not for aesthetics, not for Instagram, but for real life.

For busy days.

For hungry moments.

For when my brain just says, “please, not today.”

🥕 Step 1: Wash everything properly

Before anything gets cut, I wash all my vegetables thoroughly.

I use a vegetable cleanser (the B&B one I shared in my previous post), especially for:

carrots

cucumbers

tomatoes

anything that grows close to soil (potatoes, I’m looking at you)

Because sometimes, even when they look clean, they’re not.

There can still be:

soil residue

bacteria

things we don’t see

So I soak, gently scrub if needed, and rinse very well.

Always rinse well. I learned that the funny way 😆

🔪 Step 2: Cut based on how I actually cook

I don’t follow “proper” cuts.

I follow how I use them.

carrots → sliced, julienned, shredded, or diced depending on future dishes

bell peppers → strips for stir fry

green beans → trimmed and ready

zucchini → cut for quick cooking

tomatoes → chopped for sauces or sauté

Nothing fancy.

Just… practical.

🧊 Step 3: Store in containers that make sense

I use whatever works:

divided containers

small boxes

random containers I already have

The goal is simple:

👉 when I open the fridge, I can see everything

👉 when I cook, I can grab and go

No digging.

No thinking.

No “ugh, I still need to chop.”

🧠 Why this works (especially for busy moms)

This isn’t about being organized for the sake of it.

This is about removing friction.

Because cooking doesn’t start at the stove.

It starts at:

“Do I have the energy to prepare this?”

And when everything is already prepped?

The answer becomes:

“Yes. I can do this.”

💛 Real talk

Some of these cuts aren’t perfect.

Some pieces are uneven.

Some containers don’t match.

And that’s okay.

Because this isn’t a photoshoot.

This is food I serve my family.

If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed in the kitchen, try this.

Not perfectly.

Just… start.

Wash a few vegetables.

Cut a few things.

Put them in containers.

That’s it.

You don’t need a system.

You just need a starting point.

And one day, you’ll open your fridge…

…and thank your past self.

Because you’ll have dinner ready in 20 minutes or less.
