A Soft Snack Between Errands: Discovering the 10 Yen Pancake at the Mall

We don’t always plan our weekends down to the last detail.

Some days, it’s just errands… a quiet rhythm of walking, choosing, carrying, deciding. The kind of day where you don’t really notice hunger until your body gently taps you on the shoulder.

We normally don’t eat out, but we had too much going on that day, that we stopped by Yoshinoya for lunch. While waiting for our food, I stepped away for a bit… just a quick walk, a pause.

I love Yoshinoya’s gyudon, but I feel like it has become dry these past few years.

And that’s when I saw it.

A small kiosk, almost easy to miss. But something about it made me look twice.

A 10 yen pancake… warm, golden, pressed with that familiar coin design. I made a mental note instantly. I’m coming back for that.

And I did.

It was served hot (they only cook it after you order), the outside lightly crisp, the inside soft… and when I took a bite, the cheese stretched just enough to make you slow down and savor it.

Sweet. Salty. Comforting in that quiet, unexpected way.

Not heavy. Not overwhelming.

Just enough.

And that’s what I loved most about it.

I don’t always want to sit down for a full meal when I’m out. Especially in the heat, when my body does better with lighter, more intentional eating.

Sometimes, I just need something to steady me… something that keeps my energy soft but stable while I move through the day.

This was perfect.

We shared it, the three of us, after eating our gyudon bowls. It became a dessert of some sort.

A small moment, but one I’ve learned to pay attention to. These little in-between pauses… they matter more than we think.

Especially when I’m with my son. (I talked about the importance of having dates with your son here.

And just like that, it became part of our day.

A small discovery I’ll definitely come back to.

Before heading home, we stopped by Muji Café and picked up some bread…

…but that deserves its own story.

’Til our next shared bite,
