From Snack Box to Choice Box: A Simple Upgrade That Changed Everything

This used to be our snack box.

And for a while, it worked. I’d fill it with chocolates, little treats, chips, things my son and I could reach for anytime. It looked organized, neat… almost perfect.

But over time, something changed.

We stopped reaching for it.

Not because we didn’t like what was inside—but because everything slowly turned makunat.

That word doesn’t quite translate perfectly, but think: chocolates losing their snap, wafers turning chewy, textures going off just enough to make you pause before taking another bite.

So the box sat there.

Ignored.

Months passed, and we built a different system—just grabbing snacks from their original packaging, one at a time from tote bags. It worked… but it also meant you were limited to whatever you opened. No variety, no excitement, just “this is what we have for now.”

And because some snacks were buried at the bottom of the tote, we forgot that they existed.

I wanted to use this box again, but couldn’t find it!

Then last Wednesday —while the internet was out, of all times—the box just… reappeared.

We hadn’t been able to find it for the longest time. My son and I even looked for it together before and gave up. And then suddenly, there it was.

But by then, I already had a new system.

So instead of going back to how we used it before, I asked myself—

What if I used it differently?

Now, it’s not a snack box anymore.

It’s a choice box. A portable chocolate buffet.

Instead of keeping everything in their original packaging (where they go stale faster once opened), I unwrapped them and grouped them into compartments.

A little bit of everything.

Different textures. Different flavors. Just enough of each.

Now when we open it, it feels… intentional.

You’re not committing to one thing—you’re choosing what you feel like in the moment. A chocolate here, a wafer there, maybe something nutty, something sweet, something in between.

And because everything is visible?

Nothing gets forgotten.

Nothing turns makunat.

Everything actually gets eaten.

It’s such a small shift.

Same container. Same snacks.

But a completely different experience.

We get different flavors and textures each time.

And to prevent kunat? This box now lives in the fridge.😊
