Why I Never Panic Over ‘Best Before’ - And How It Got Me This Ferrero Tray for $5

 

I’ve had a love affair with Ferrero ever since I was a teenager. At one point we broke up because it triggered migraines and vertigo. 

I didn’t eat it for a few years. 

Then one day, our relationship was rekindled. 

My fridge always has some Ferrero in stock. 

Ferrero rarely goes on sale. One day, while waiting at the checkout, I saw this big box on the discount shelf. I wondered why, so I took a closer look.

Ah, best before in 20 days. 

I smirked and took one with me to checkout and handed it to the cashier saying, “we’ll take this, too.”

Will we finish everything in 20 days? Of course not. We eat 1 or 2 pieces. One small box lasts us about 2 months. 

So how were we going to beat the 20-day deadline?

We don’t.

You see, ‘Best Before’ is different from ‘Expiry.’ Best before simply means that the product may not be in its best form (texture, looks, sometimes taste, too) after that date has passed, but is still edible and completely safe. 

Armed with this knowledge, I have scored many a luxury food at ridiculously low prices over the years. 

Did the Ferrero still taste the same after the 20 days have passed? 

Absolutely. 

It was as good as a fresh box of Ferreros.
