There was no special occasion.
It was a regular afternoon. My son and I were out in the mall.
We shopped, we laughed, we looked at things.
We were having so much fun that we didn’t realize that the sun was going down and we haven’t had lunch yet.
We went to the nearest restaurant that is safe for us (we have a lot of sensitivities).
We both love Japanese food. And this restaurant has been part of our many mommy-son dates over the years, ever since he could eat out.
Tempura, always.
Gohan, a must-have for my son whenever we eat Japanese. Except for when we order noodles.
I tried this croquette. I think it was crab. I can’t quite remember. But It had too many vegetables, which I cannot eat. We brought it home for his dad.
My son’s favorite chicken teriyaki
These simple lunch dates with my son help us bond. We become closer…over food. And isn’t that what breaking bread is about? Unity, equality, and shared faith.
When we’re at a restaurant, I see how he’s growing up. What kind of young man he’s turning into. It makes me observe him through a different lens - what food does he choose? How does he act? How does he eat? Are his manners intact?
We discover things about each other that we normally wouldn’t when we’re at home, eating home cooked meals.
There’s something special about having someone else prepare food for you, even if it’s just a simple smoothie
Perhaps one of the best things about eating out with my son is sharing food with him.
We have this habit of ordering a few items from the menu and sharing them. We don’t order one dish for him, one dish for me. We share everything.
Even with drinks. I normally can’t finish a tall glass of fruit smoothie, so we share that. But during this lunch date, we ordered two. My son loves mango smoothies and they have a small glass. So he ordered one for himself.
And that’s alright. Some things aren’t meant to shared. Even with your mom. 😊
Kids grow up so fast and these lunch dates are very precious. I always make it a point to have them whenever we can.
One day, we will add his children to these dates. And those moments will become new memories and stories to be told to their children.

’Til our next shared bite,
Stay cozy. Stay curious. Stay nourished.
LET'S EAT.
