Most people reach for warmth when they need comfort.
I don’t.
Warmth asks something from my body.
It lingers.
It builds.
Sometimes… it overwhelms.
So I reach for something else.
Something cold.
Soft.
Quiet.
Contained.
A kouign amann, straight from the fridge.
Flaky layers no longer crisp,
but settled.
A glass of milk beside it.
Not hot.
Not even warm.
Cold.
Always cold.
I don’t heat anything up.
I don’t fix the texture.
I don’t try to bring it back to what it was “meant” to be.
I take it as it is.
And maybe that’s the point.
On days when my body feels like too much,
I don’t need intensity.
I need gentleness.
In the form of cold food.
Sometimes a bowl of cold lychees.
Other times a couple of cold slices of apples.
I need food that doesn’t rise to meet me,
but stays where it is…
and lets me come to it slowly.
Sometimes it’s this.
Sometimes it’s ice cream,
eaten straight from the container.
A spoon left inside.
Cold.
Soft.
Familiar.
No bowls.
No plating.
No effort to make it look like I have everything together.
Because I don’t.
And I don’t need to.
Cold food doesn’t rush me.
It doesn’t bloom in heat.
It doesn’t demand attention.
It stays quiet.
Like a quiet piece of leche flan waiting in the fridge.
And in that quiet,
I can finally hear myself again.
This isn’t about indulgence.
It’s not about escape.
It’s about choosing something my body can hold
without pushing back.
Something that soothes instead of stirs.
Something that lets me stay.
So when I reach for cold things,
it isn’t random.
It isn’t preference.
It’s understanding.
A quiet agreement between my body and me.
That today,
this is what we can handle.
And that’s enough.
