I thought it was hunger.
That familiar pull.
The one that makes you stand up without thinking.
I walked to the snack box.
Opened something.
Anything.
I reached for something sweet first.
Japanese chocolate biscuits.
Soft. Easy. Familiar.
Took a bite.
Waited.
Nothing.
So I reached for something salty.
Something louder.
Crunchier. Cheez Curlz.
Something that should have… done something.
Another bite.
Still nothing.
I sat there with both in front of me.
Switching between them like maybe I just hadn’t found the right one yet.
Sweet.
Salty.
Sweet again.
Trying to land on something that felt like there it is.
But it never came.
I used to tell people this before, as a nutrition coach.
That hunger isn’t always about food.
That sometimes, you’re not looking for fullness.
You’re looking for something else entirely.
Now I realize, that’s exactly what’s happening to me.
Because I wasn’t hungry.
Not really.
I was tired.
Or restless.
Or maybe just… a little invisible.
And I thought I could fix that
with something I could hold.
Something I could taste.
Something instant.
But nothing stayed.
Nothing softened the moment.
Nothing made it quiet.
I finished everything.
But the feeling didn’t stop.
The longing was still there.
And then I sat there long enough to notice—
it wasn’t the food I was craving.
It was the feeling of being met.
Of being seen.
Of something… landing.
And food was just the closest thing
I could reach.
