Some mornings, I want a proper breakfast without spending too much time preparing it. Especially when I have a busy day ahead, anything that makes breakfast quicker and easier is worth considering.
That’s why Tapa King’s ready-to-eat Tapa Flakes caught my attention.
I like tapa, and the idea of having crispy shredded beef ready to serve sounded particularly convenient. Add some rice and a fried egg, and breakfast is practically sorted.
But while I enjoyed the flavor, there was one thing about these tapa flakes that made me reconsider buying them again.
What Are Tapa King Tapa Flakes?
Tapa King Tapa Flakes come in a 100-gram resealable pouch. The packaging describes them as ready-to-eat crispy shredded beef, made from their classic tapa that’s fried and pulled into delicate floss.
It’s an appealing idea, especially for anyone who enjoys Filipino breakfasts but doesn’t always have time to cook meat from scratch.
You can serve the flakes with rice and eggs for a quick tapsilog-inspired meal, or use them as an accompaniment to other dishes.
First Impressions: Crispy, Flavorful, and Convenient
The first thing I liked was how easy the product was to serve.
There was no need to prepare the beef separately. I could simply put some on a plate alongside the rest of breakfast.
The shredded texture also made it easy to portion out, and the flavor was genuinely enjoyable.
It had that savory tapa character I was hoping for, and the crispy flakes worked nicely with rice.
For a busy morning, I could certainly see the appeal.
The Problem: Too Many Tough Bits
Unfortunately, the texture wasn’t consistently pleasant.
Mixed in with the shredded beef were quite a few hard, tough pieces. Some were noticeably difficult to chew, including the piece shown in my photograph.
And this wasn’t just an occasional little crunchy bit.
There were enough of them that I found myself having to pay attention while eating, which rather defeated the purpose of an easy, fuss-free breakfast.
I expected crispy shredded beef, but I also expected the pieces to be comfortably edible.
It’s a shame because I actually liked the taste.
If the texture had been more consistent, I would have enjoyed the product considerably more.
A Small Pouch With a Short Window for Finishing
Another consideration is the product’s storage instructions.
Once opened, the contents need to be consumed within two to three days.
For a 100-gram pouch, that may be perfectly manageable for a household that eats tapa regularly. But if you’re only having a little at breakfast or alternating between different meals, it’s something worth keeping in mind.
I prefer products that fit naturally into how we eat, rather than feeling that I have to plan several meals around finishing one package.
Would I Buy Tapa King Tapa Flakes Again?
Probably not.
And that’s disappointing because there was quite a lot to like about the product.
It was convenient, flavorful, and genuinely useful for mornings when I was busy or in a rush. Having ready-to-eat tapa on hand could make putting together breakfast so much easier.
But the tough pieces were difficult to overlook.
For me, texture matters just as much as flavor, especially with a product that’s supposed to make eating more convenient.
I wouldn’t rule out trying an improved version someday, but based on this experience, I’m not particularly inclined to purchase another pouch.
Final Thoughts
Tapa King Tapa Flakes have a good concept behind them: familiar Filipino breakfast flavors in a quick, ready-to-eat format.
The flavor delivered. The convenience delivered.
Unfortunately, the texture didn’t.
And sometimes, that’s enough to turn a promising pantry staple into a one-time purchase.
Have you tried Tapa King Tapa Flakes? Did you encounter the same tough pieces, or was your experience different?
