Sometimes dinner does not need to make sense to anyone except the person eating it. Sometimes you want spaghetti. Sometimes you want potatoes. And sometimes McDonald’s chops crinkle-cut potatoes into adorable little pieces, puts them inside what looks suspiciously like a tiny pillow box, calls them Poptato , and suddenly regular fries have competition. At least in our house. Poptato is one of the newer additions to the McDonald’s Philippines menu, arriving around the same time as the Choco Lava Puff I recently tried . And unlike the Choco Lava Puff, which left my son and me somewhere around the hmmm, it’s okay territory, Poptato was an immediate hit. Baguio Country Club Cheese Bread

My sister went to Baguio, Ifugao, etc. last week. She brought home a bunch of goodies including this: It’s supposed to be a cheese bread but it’s filled with walnuts and dried fruit. It’s like a fruit cake inside. I didn’t like this. I like sweet and savory but this was just terrible. I like dried fruits as my grandma makes a mean fruitcake and she uses the same ingredients. I just didn’t appreciate this. It really tasted weird for me. The filling just does not go with the bread.

Sauteed Tuna and Sayote (Chayote)

This post is for all my man friends out there who rely on this blog to feed them (haha!) or give them ideas on what to eat aside from the regular junk food that they buy dyan sa tabi tabi. Or at the very least, give them a nudge to eat decent food. We were supposed to have this for baon but my kuya invited us for lunch so we had this for dinner instead. Filipinos are very creative when it comes to cooking food that will feed every member of the family. Even some well-off families serve simple gisa or sauteed dishes. Men are also taught this very simple way of cooking. Ginisa dishes often include a vegetable and some meat. But some go without the meat especially if the budget is low. Ginisa is very popular with the middle class, down because they normally have soup which is a good extender and helps you get full without eating too much.
