240 Baons + 365 Meals

My sister went to Baguio, Ifugao, etc. last week. She brought home a bunch of goodies including this: It’s supposed to be a cheese bread but it’s filled with walnuts and dried fruit. It’s like a fruit cake inside. I didn’t like this. I like sweet and savory but this was just terrible. I like dried fruits as my grandma makes a mean fruitcake and she uses the same ingredients. I just didn’t appreciate this. It really tasted weird for me. The filling just does not go with the bread.

TGIF Lunch Spread

I just want to share with you this lunch spread I made last Friday. I was washing the dishes when I heard our neighbor talking to her "suking" fishmonger. She was buying tilapia. I like tilapia but was scared that I'd end up with the "magilik" kind. My last 3 buys ended up in disappointment. Since he was a suki, I decided to risk it and asked my husband to buy 5 pieces. I would give the two to my mom and sister. Thank God they tasted good! Here's what I made for lunch: Fried tilapia, sauteed squash with minced pork, and chili shrimps. We also had a simple dipping sauce and some lanzones which I also bought from a vendor passing by. The pandemic has made me a convert. I usually don't trust vendors but fortunately, I found some really good ones. The shrimps are also from the same vendor. They were large river shrimps and tasted really good in this dish. I did realize though, after cooking, that I didn't devein them and so we just scraped the digestive

Sauteed Tuna and Sayote (Chayote)

This post is for all my man friends out there who rely on this blog to feed them (haha!) or give them ideas on what to eat aside from the regular junk food that they buy dyan sa tabi tabi. Or at the very least, give them a nudge to eat decent food. We were supposed to have this for baon but my kuya invited us for lunch so we had this for dinner instead. Filipinos are very creative when it comes to cooking food that will feed every member of the family. Even some well-off families serve simple gisa or sauteed dishes. Men are also taught this very simple way of cooking. Ginisa dishes often include a vegetable and some meat. But some go without the meat especially if the budget is low. Ginisa is very popular with the middle class, down because they normally have soup which is a good extender and helps you get full without eating too much.
